PTA resorts to text messages over social media blasphemy issue

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Tuesday has sent text messages to people on the pretext of controlling blasphemous content on social media.

“Uploading and sharing of any blasphemous content on Internet is a punishable offense under the law. Instead of taking law in hand, such content should be reported to PTA on [email protected] for legal action,” the message states.

Earlier in the day, an official of the PTA, during a National Assembly’s proceedings, said that the PTA has received more than 3000 complaints regarding blasphemous contents on social media sites.

The move comes months after an IHC bench ordered the PTA to block pages or websites containing blasphemous material, which gave rise to issues, such as people taking law into their own hands.
