White Lotus Season 4 Heads to the French Riviera With a New Cast and a Behind-the-Scenes Shake-Up
White Lotus Season 4 is moving to the French Riviera with a new cast and notable behind-the-scenes changes, signaling a fresh chapter for the hit HBO series.

HBO's acclaimed anthology drama White Lotus is moving to France for its fourth season, with filming now under way at the Château de la Messardière — a five-star clifftop hotel overlooking the bay of Saint-Tropez. The Côte d'Azur setting promises the same blend of sun, wealth, and simmering dysfunction that has made the show one of television's most talked-about properties, but the build-up to Season 4 has already generated headlines of its own, largely due to an unexpected change in the cast.
Helena Bonham Carter had been attached to a role that creator Mike White reportedly developed with her specifically in mind. However, she departed the production shortly after filming began. An HBO spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that the character White had written for Bonham Carter did not align once she was on set. The circumstances beyond that have not been elaborated upon, leaving the precise nature of the creative differences open to speculation.

Laura Dern Steps Into a Leading Role
Oscar-winning actress Laura Dern has since joined the production, though reports in Variety make clear she will not be taking on the role that was originally written for Bonham Carter. The part Dern plays is understood to be a distinct creation in its own right. It is not her first involvement with the franchise — she provided a brief voice cameo during Season 2 — but this marks her first full, substantive appearance in the series. Given her track record across both prestige drama and broader commercial work, her casting has been met with considerable anticipation.
What the Saint-Tropez Setting Signals
The choice of location feels pointed. Previous seasons have taken the White Lotus resort to Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand — each setting shaping the tone of the season it hosted. Saint-Tropez, with its associations with old money, European aristocracy, and conspicuous luxury, offers fertile ground for the kind of class-conscious satire the show does best. Season 3, set in Thailand, was considered by many critics to be the most ambitious run yet, though it did not quite match the cultural impact of the first two. A return to a European backdrop may be White's way of recapturing some of that earlier energy.
The Château de la Messardière, where production is based, is one of the more recognisable properties on the Riviera — a clifftop estate with a history of hosting celebrities, dignitaries, and the quietly very rich. As a stand-in for the fictional White Lotus resort chain, it fits seamlessly.
New Viewers Can Start Here Without Any Prior Knowledge
One of the more viewer-friendly aspects of the series is its self-contained structure. Each season introduces an entirely fresh set of characters and a new location, with no narrative continuity carrying over from previous runs. The only constant is the White Lotus brand itself — and the reliably poor behaviour of those who can afford to stay there. For anyone yet to watch the show, Season 4 would be as valid a starting point as any other.
A release date has not been confirmed. Given that production has only recently commenced, a late 2026 arrival looks ambitious, with 2027 considered the more realistic expectation.
