Princess of Wales Opts for Cream Roland Mouret at Peter Phillips' Wedding — and Reunites With a University Ex in the Pews
Princess of Wales Kate attended Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling’s wedding in Gloucestershire in a cream Roland Mouret dress, drawing attention for the bold color choice—and reuniting with a familiar university ex in the pews.

The Princess of Wales drew considerable attention at last weekend's wedding of Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling in Gloucestershire, both for the outfit she chose and for a rather unexpected encounter inside the church. Kate, 44, attended the ceremony at All Saints Church in Kemble on 6th June wearing a short-sleeved cream boucle midi dress by Roland Mouret, accessorised with a wide-brimmed hat by Jane Taylor London and stiletto heels. The ensemble was polished and considered — but the shade immediately became a talking point.
Wearing cream or near-white to a wedding is widely regarded as a social misstep, and the choice did not go unnoticed by royal watchers. It was not the first occasion on which the Princess had prompted this particular debate. At the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's 2018 wedding, her bespoke Alexander McQueen coat dress photographed in tones close to white, though it was officially described as primrose yellow. On this occasion, colour psychologist Tash Bradley told Hello! magazine that choosing all-white requires a certain confidence — it is, as she put it, a bold statement rather than a safe one. Whether intentional or not, the effect drew as much comment as the occasion itself.

A Departure From Her Signature Style Habits
What made the choice additionally notable was that both the dress and the hat were entirely new purchases. Kate has long been celebrated — and occasionally gently teased — for her practice of rewearing pieces across years and occasions. She wore a previously owned McQueen to the Sussex wedding, and appeared at the Crown Prince of Jordan's 2023 nuptials in an Elie Saab gown first worn at her sister Pippa's wedding six years earlier. Arriving at a family wedding in two brand new items marked a clear break from that established pattern.

Fashion writer Bethan Holt told People magazine she interpreted the shift as part of a gradual style evolution rather than a dramatic change of direction. She noted that Kate is mindful of maintaining continuity while introducing subtle variation — moving things forward without doing anything so unexpected that it feels dissonant with the image she has carefully cultivated. It is, as Holt described it, a very fine line to walk.
An Encounter With a Familiar Face
The sartorial discussion was not the only noteworthy aspect of the Princess's day. Among the guests at All Saints Church was Rupert Finch — Kate's boyfriend during her first year at the University of St Andrews, before William arrived in her life — accompanied by his wife, Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs. The pair married in 2013, and Lady Natasha attended the ceremony in a light blue dress from her own fashion label, Beulah London, a brand that Kate herself has worn on several occasions, including at a polo match as recently as 2023.
Finch and Kate's brief relationship in 2001 has passed into well-documented royal history — it was recreated in the sixth series of The Crown — though by all accounts the parting was amicable. Finch was among the guests invited to Kate and William's 2011 wedding at Westminster Abbey, which speaks to the lack of lasting awkwardness between them. His presence at Peter Phillips' wedding, therefore, was unremarkable in practical terms, even if it provided an irresistible footnote for those following the day's events.
A Relationship That Began at St Andrews
It was at St Andrews, of course, that the more significant romance took root. Kate and William met as students, became close friends first, and gradually fell into a relationship that would eventually lead to one of the most widely watched weddings in modern history. William proposed in Kenya in 2010, using the sapphire and diamond ring that had belonged to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. The couple have three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — and William is heir to the throne.
At Peter Phillips' wedding, the Princess of Wales was greeted warmly by well-wishers gathered outside the church, with her public appearances continuing to attract significant attention in the months since she completed her cancer treatment last year. The cream Roland Mouret dress is unlikely to be the last of her outfit choices to generate debate — but that, for one of the most closely observed dressers in the world, is very much part of the territory.
