Heatwave pushes temperatures above 40°C in parts of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Temperatures climbed past 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of Pakistan on Tuesday as a heatwave continued across the country, with the current spell forecast to persist until June 12.

According to the reported temperatures for Tuesday, Lahore recorded the highest temperature at 43°C, while Islamabad reached 41°C. Karachi’s highest temperature was 36°C.

Images from different cities showed people trying to cope with the intense heat. In Rawalpindi, commuters were seen gathering under bus shelters and rushing to board air-conditioned buses, while traffic police personnel and labourers covered their heads with cloth at road junctions and on streets.

In Lahore, workers continued outdoor labour in the heat, including pushing carts, transporting water cans and loading ice blocks onto vehicles. In Karachi, commuters were seen drinking cold water being served along a street during the hot weather.
