Viral Chinese youth issues public apology after harassing women in Islamabad

A young Chinese national has issued a public apology after a video showing him harassing women in Islamabad went viral, sparking widespread outrage and debate.

The original video, shared on X, appears to have been filmed in the F-10 Markaz area of the capital. It shows the man, believed to be a Chinese visitor, approaching women dressed in burqas in a crowded marketplace. In the video, he can be seen offering them cigarettes while repeatedly greeting them with phrases like “hello” and “how are you” as they walk past, refusing to engage. His companion, who recorded the incident, can be heard laughing in the background.

The video also shows the man stopping at a food stall, taking what looks like fries or a similar snack, and eating them without attempting to pay the vendor. His behavior, combined with the mocking tone of the recording, quickly drew strong criticism online, with many condemning it as disrespectful, harassing, and insensitive to local cultural norms.

As the backlash grew, a second video surfaced in which the young man appeared on camera to apologize. Addressing viewers directly, he explained that he had recently arrived in Pakistan and was unaware of local traditions and sensitivities. He acknowledged his actions were inappropriate, expressed regret for his behavior, and emphasized that his conduct should not reflect negatively on the Chinese community or harm Pakistan-China relations.
