KP alleges ‘contempt’ after CM denied access to Imran Khan yet again

PESHAWAR: Special Assistant to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister for Information Shafi Jan on Thursday criticised the federal authorities after KP Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi was once again unable to meet PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail despite what he said were clear court directions permitting the visit.

Speaking to reporters, Shafi Jan claimed that security personnel placed barriers at the jail’s entrance and blocked the chief minister’s vehicle, marking the tenth time he had been prevented from meeting the former prime minister. He described the move as political victimisation and alleged that it amounted to contempt of court.

The provincial aide also condemned the police action against PTI leaders and supporters who had gathered outside the jail earlier this week. He said the use of water cannons on Imran Khan’s sisters and party leadership was a “shameful” display of state force and reflected intolerance towards peaceful demonstrations.

Shafi Jan further said PTI parliamentary leader Shahid Khattak sustained a fractured leg during an altercation with police on Tuesday night, calling it an example of what he termed heavy-handed tactics.

Furthermore, the provincial official said that targeting women and unarmed political activists violated constitutional freedoms and undermined democratic norms.

He also criticised the narrative portraying PTI as an “enemy of the country”, saying that linking political differences with treason risked deepening divisions. According to him, voters would hold the government accountable for what he described as unjustifiable restrictions and coercive measures.

Earlier, Shafi Jan visited Shahid Khattak in Islamabad to inquire about his condition following the incident outside Adiala Jail.
