Heatwave alert issued by Met Office for Pakistan until June 12

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Office) has issued a heatwave alert for the country from June 9 to June 12, due to the development of high pressure over the region.

Temperatures are expected to be 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal in central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan until June 12. Meanwhile, day temperatures in upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan will likely remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal during the same period.

The Met Office also warned that dust storms and gusty winds are expected over the plains of the country due to the excessive heating.

Authorities have urged the public, particularly children, women, and senior citizens, to take precautionary measures during this heatwave. Experts advise citizens to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Rising temperatures in northern areas may accelerate the snowmelt rate, further impacting water levels.

The previous day’s weather was marked by hot and dry conditions across the country, especially in the plains. Jacobabad recorded the highest temperature at 50°C, while Dadu, Sibi, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, and Shaheed Benazirabad all reported temperatures above 47°C.
