Billy Joel Shares Important Health Update Following Brain Disorder Diagnosis

Billy Joel reassured his fans that he’s “not dying” following his recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a neurological condition. The 75-year-old musician made the statement during a dinner with radio host Howard Stern two weeks ago, which Stern shared during the June 3 episode of The Howard Stern Show. Despite the seriousness of his condition, Joel emphasized that his overall health is stable and wanted to put any concerns to rest.

Joel’s diagnosis has led to the cancellation of all upcoming concert dates, as his team reported issues with hearing, vision, and balance, which have made performing impossible. NPH, which involves an abnormal buildup of fluid in the brain, can affect memory, concentration, and motor skills. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it can also impair cognitive abilities and balance, making recovery challenging.

Following his diagnosis, Joel’s team announced that he is undergoing physical therapy, as recommended by his doctors. While NPH can sometimes be treated with surgery, Joel’s current treatment plan is focused on physical rehabilitation. Despite the health challenges, Stern noted that Joel remained in good spirits, especially when discussing his passion for music. “He lit up when I told him I’m playing classical music on the guitar,” Stern shared, highlighting Joel’s enduring love for his craft.

Family support has been pivotal during this time. Joel’s wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, took to Instagram to thank fans for their “outpouring of love and support” and praised the “excellent care and swift diagnosis” they received. She also shared that Joel is “a father and husband who is the center of our world.”

Joel’s daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, also posted a message expressing admiration for her father’s strength and resilience. She reassured fans that he is “fully committed to making a full recovery” and continues with physical therapy.

The news of Joel’s health condition has prompted a wave of support from fans worldwide, many of whom have followed his career since the 1970s. Known for timeless hits like “Piano Man,” “Uptown Girl,” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” Joel’s recent Madison Square Garden residency further solidified his place as one of the most beloved figures in American music.
