James Middleton has shared his thoughts on the challenges faced by his sister, the Princess of Wales, during her recent cancer diagnosis, offering insight into how the Middleton family came together to support her.
In an exclusive interview with The Times, James, 38, spoke about the difficult period for both Kate and the broader Middleton family. “For her and her family, it was a challenging time, and I know for us as a bigger family, it was a challenging time,” he said. “But it’s all about communication and offering support and help where you can.”
He emphasized the importance of being there for a loved one, saying, “Being there for someone is such an important part, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be on your terms. It should be on their terms; unconditional. ‘I’m not doing it for something in return. I’m doing it because I love you.’ That’s the simplest way of really demonstrating love. You can do it in all these various fancy ways, but actually, you know, it is just generally being there.”
Princess Kate shared her cancer diagnosis publicly in March 2024, revealing she had undergone preventative chemotherapy. By January of this year, she announced she was in remission. Reflecting on her journey in a heartfelt video message released in September, Kate described her experience as “complex, scary, and unpredictable,” but expressed hope for the future: “My path to healing and full recovery is long, and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”
While the Middleton family is generally known for their privacy, James has openly supported Kate through her battle. Last March, he shared a touching tribute on social media following Kate’s cancer announcement, posting a childhood photo with a caption that read, “Over the years, we have climbed many mountains together. As a family, we will climb this one with you too.”

James also spoke about how his sisters, Kate and Pippa, have always supported him, particularly during his battle with depression. He recalled how they joined him in therapy sessions to better understand his struggles. “Not necessarily at the same time, but either individually and sometimes together. And that was so important because that helped them understand me and how my mind was working,” James shared in a 2021 interview with The Telegraph. “And I think the way the therapy helped me was that I didn’t need my family to say, ‘What can we do?’ The only thing they could do was just come to some of the therapy sessions to start to understand.”
In these difficult times, the Middleton siblings have continued to demonstrate unwavering support for each other, highlighting the importance of family bonds and unconditional care.
