NEW YORK: Ambassador Hameed Ajibaiye Opeloyeru, Permanent Observer of the OIC Mission to the United Nations, has pledged to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) commitment for facilitating a resolution to the Kashmir dispute in accordance with international law and United Nations resolutions.
At an event commemorating the fifth anniversary of India’s revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, which granted the region special status, Opeloyeru highlighted the OIC’s adoption of a plan of action aimed at expediting the resolution of this long-standing crisis.
He emphasized the significance of this dispute in threatening the peace, stability, and security of South Asia.
Expressing solidarity with the Kashmiri people, Opeloyeru reaffirmed their right to self-determination, as recognized by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 47 from April 21, 1948. He urged UN member states to support the implementation of relevant UN resolutions to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir conflict.
The event also featured speeches from Ambassador Munir Akram of Pakistan, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, and Senator Lt. General (rtd) Abdul Qayyum, who called for international efforts to address the dispute, drawing parallels between the situations in Kashmir and Palestine.
