Elahi poised to take on top legal role as attorney general

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to appoint Shehzad Ata Elahi, a young lawyer from Lahore, as the new attorney general of Pakistan, it emerged on Thursday.

Elahi is the grandson of Fazal Elahi Chaudhry, who served as the nation’s president between 1973 and 1978, and highly regarded for his hard work, integrity, and mastery of the law.

He is a corporate lawyer at the prestigious law firm Cornelius, Lane, and Mufti, and boasts a wealth of experience in commercial, tax and banking law, as well as civil, commercial, corporate, and constitutional litigation.

The post fell vacant after Ashtar Ausaf resigned from the post in October of last year, citing health issues.

Earlier, President Arif Alvi on December 24 approved the summary of Mansoor Usman Awan as the new attorney general, but he later recused himself from holding the post.

In his letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Awan said: “Last month, you had offered me to serve as the attorney general for Pakistan, for which I am very grateful. However, due to unavoidable professional commitments, I will be unable to serve as the attorney general for Pakistan, at this time. I remain very thankful to you for reposing your confidence in me.”

The lack of representation in the office has drawn the attention of not only the Supreme Court but also the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which has requested an explanation from the law ministry regarding the situation.
