Unfair Recruitment

The Education and Literacy Department in Sindh recently recruited junior elementary school teachers (JESTs) and primary school teachers (PSTs). The induction process was quite ineffective and unprofessional as it was solely based on a single test. No interview was held to analyse the teaching ability, skills and teaching methods of potential teachers.
In addition to tests based on multiple choice questions (MCQs), the interview process plays a key role as the candidates have to prove their capabilities before a panel of experts. The interviewers also get a chance to examine a candidate’s cognitive and professional abilities closely.
Teachers are the backbone of the education sector. They should not only be capable, sincere and skilled, but should also possess relevant qualifications, like BEd and MEd. These are professional degrees for teachers just like other professionals, such as engineers, advocates or doctors, have to have their respective professional qualification before they may practise.
A test alone cannot determine the abilities of a candidate. Therefore, an interview should be mandatory. The relevant minister should look into the recruitment process and ensure that the best candidates are chosen for such positions.
