SHC turns down bail request of Sindh Assembly speaker in NAB case

KARACHI: After declining his request for bail in an assets beyond sources case, the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday turned down another similar petition of Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani in another National Accountability Bureau (NAB) case.

The petition was rejected after the junior counsel of the speaker declined to further pursue the matter.

Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro heard the case which Durrani and his counsel Shahab Sarki skipped. A junior counsel for Durrani withdrew the request on the outset of the hearing, saying his client intended to appeal the rejection of his bail request in the Supreme Court.

At this, Justice Kalhoro wondered that how it was possible to grant relief to the applicant when he was not present in the court.

Durrani is facing accusations of his alleged involvement in financial irregularities in the construction of the MPA Hostel of the Sindh Assembly. It is pertinent to mention here the NAB had converted the inquiry against Durrani into an investigation.

The high court had rejected the bail petition of Durrani and seven other suspects in the assets case.

The SHC, however, had approved bails of Durrani’s wife and daughters in the case.
