PIA finally reduces fares for GB after suo motu notice by court

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has reduced its fares on the Gilgit/Skardu-Islamabad route for both sides, a report submitted to the Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court (SAC) read.

According to a statement issued by the SAC, the PIA general manager informed the court on Wednesday that the national airline has lowered its fares to and from Gilgit/Skardu-Islamabad, as opposed to its earlier announcement of a one-way cut.

It may be noted that PIA had previously announced a reduced minimum ticket at Rs6,915 for flights from Islamabad to Skardu/Gilgit, whereas passengers travelling from Gilgit/Skardu to Islamabad were forced to pay Rs10,000 to Rs17,000.

Following the announcement, residents of the area had expressed dismay over the impact of the one-way cut in fares (only from Islamabad to Gilgit/Skardu). People of the northern region usually travel South to avoid harsh weather conditions in the winter, and were expecting to see a difference in fares on flights on both sides.

Earlier, in a suo motu notice, a divisional bench of SAC had directed PIA’s general manager in Gilgit to completely reduce the fare on Gilgit/Skardu-Islamabad route. The bench comprising GB Chief Justice Justice Syed Arshad Hussain Shah and Senior Judge Justice Wazir Shakeel Ahmed had asked the GM to contact PIA managing director and submit a detailed report on the matter by Wednesday.
