Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill on Saturday said that the Pakistan Electronic Media Authority Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and other “legal options” would be used if Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif addresses the opposition-led All Parties Conference (APC) or if his speech is aired.
Taking to Twitter, the SAPM said, “How is it possible that a fugitive carries out political activities and gives speeches? The Sharif clan can only spew lies. They are such big liars that they also lie about [their] medical conditions.”
The comments follow the development of Nawaz confirming his virtual attendance at the conference which is scheduled to be held on Sunday.
Meanwhile, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Twitter confirmed that the party would utilise social media platforms to live stream Nawaz’s address as it can’t be blocked that way.
“We are doing that [God willing],” she wrote to a user who had suggested that she look into live streaming.
Earlier this week, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Nawaz while dismissing his application seeking exemption from personal appearance in the hearing of appeals against his conviction in the Al-Azizia and Avenfield properties references.
On Thursday, the Pakistan High Commission (PHC) in London received arrest warrants sent by the government for Nawaz.
The high commission did not make an official comment on the development but sources confirmed that the mission had received the paperwork to serve the arrest warrants on the ousted premier.
In this regard, the IHC assistant registrar had directed the foreign secretary to ensure Nawaz’s production in court on September 22.
“Nawaz would also have to appear on any other dates that might be fixed by the court,” the letter added.
On Friday, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari invited Nawaz to attend the APC to be held in Islamabad through video link.
It may be mentioned here that former president Asif Ali Zardari will also join the APC via video link.
The APC will convene at the Zardari House in Islamabad on September 20. Their focus is on driving out the incumbent government.
“The situation in the country has reached a stage where we cannot afford even a moment’s delay,” JUI-F’s Durrani said, “We want free and fair elections in the country, with no interference whatsoever.”
Speaking on the upcoming meeting’s agenda, he said, “The APC will decide whether there will be a new election or an in-house change.”
Some have tied his upcoming APC participation to the possibility of his return to Pakistan. However, the Sharif family has not commented on these rumours.
