Active coronavirus cases drop below 90,000; death toll tops 5,000

ISLAMABAD: There has been improvement in the number of recoveries from Covid-19 in the country with figure now reaching 149,092, said the National Command and Operation Centre on Friday.

These recoveries have pushed down the total active Covid-19 cases in the country to 89,449. A total of 2,751 new cases surfaced during the last twenty-four hours taking the tally to 243,599. These include 85,261 in Punjab, 100,900 in Sindh, 29,406 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 11,099 in Balochistan, 13,829 in Islamabad, 1,619 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 1,485 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

The death toll from the virus has reached 5,058 with 75 more deaths reported over the last 24 hours. Of these 75 people, 68 died in the hospital while seven died out of hospitals. A total of 23,255 coronavirus tests were carried out during the last 24 hours.

According to NCOC, there is no patient on ventilator in GB, AJK and Balochistan. A total of 420 ventilators are occupied across Pakistan out of 1,568 ventilators allocated for Covid-19 patients. There are 733 hospitals to treat Covid-19 patients across the country with 4,565 patients admitted there.

Meanwhile, Pakistan became the 11th worst-affected country hit by the coronavirus after it overtook Italy in the number of Covid-19 cases reported, showed data from the John Hopkins University on Friday.
