Verdict reserved on contempt plea against Vawda

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday reserved its verdict on a contempt of court petition against Federal Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda.

A petition was filed in the high court in January seeking Vawda’s disqualification for allegedly concealing his US nationality at the time of filing his nomination papers to contest the 2018 general elections. Taking up the petition, the court had asked the minister to submit a response. However, the minister failed to comply with the order.

A subsequent petition seeking contempt of court proceedings against the minister was filed on Wednesday.

After the hearing, presided over by IHC Justice Aamir Farooq, the high court reserved its verdict.

A report published in January had claimed that Vawda was an American national at the time of filing nomination papers. He submitted his nomination papers on June 11, 2018, which were approved by the election body a week later on June 18, the report had said.

However, the PTI MP applied for the renunciation of his nationality with the US consulate at Karachi four days after the fact on June 22, 2018, the report had revealed.
