–Ghani alleges federal minister for education unclear, ill-prepared to handle ongoing education crisis

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Education and Labour Saeed Ghani on Tuesday announced said that examinations for students of class one to 8 will not be held in Sindh province whereas the students would be promoted to the next class.

Announcing the news in a press conference after the education department’s steering committee meeting here on Tuesday, Ghani added that only weak students might have to sit in exams.

The meeting discussed the academic year in Sindh, the end of holidays, examinations for classes one to 12. Secretary Education Sindh Syed Khalid Haider Shah, Secretary Colleges Sindh Baqir Naqvi and others were present on the occasion.

According to the details, the of the Sindh Education Department steering committee has constituted a committee of chairmen of all boards who will prepare their report regarding examinations of weak students by today evening. The National Coordination Committee (NCC) will then announce a decision made on the matter.

“Alternative education will be introduced by the Sindh government,” Ghani added while predicting that the pandemic would last longer than expected.

The provincial minister alleged that Federal Minister of Finance Abdul Hafeez Sheikh was coming to visit Karachi for political gains.

Criticising Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood, Ghani said that the federal minister in the NCC meeting two days ago had said that exams of 9th to 12th grade would not be held and all students will be promoted to the next level.

“No consultation was held with us in this regard and therefore we made it clear to him that Sindh would work out a plan of action in this regard after consultation with its steering committee. Last night, the federal minister himself has admitted that there would be difficulties in his decision and he would consult us again on this matter,” he added.

Further, he said that educational institutions could not be reopened from June 1.

“All announcements regarding the reopening of institutions and the start of the academic year would be made soon,” he said.
