LAHORE: As per Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Shoaib Dastagir’s instructions, the police, under Section 144, began strictly implementing a lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday.

Additionally, police teams under the supervision of their respective District Police Officers (DPOs) are running a special awareness campaign against coronavirus in coordination with the health department and other relevant government institutions.

People involved in hoarding face masks and hand sanitizers for profiteering are being put behind bars.

As per details, cases against violators of section 144 and 245 are being registered without any discrimination since March 16 due to which as many as 4,890 persons who committed violations have been arrested; among them, 89 accused have been acquitted on warning.

IGP Dastagir directed police officers and unit chiefs to supervise actions taken against violators and submit progress reports on the lockdown to Central police office on a daily basis.

He further said that action shall be taken against persons who don’t follow the government’s orders.

“Officers and officials deputed in fields on security duty should be high alert to ensure the strict implementation of instructions issued in the wake of the pandemic so that they may also secure themselves,” he said while directing the concerned officials to fully protect themselves with face masks, hand sanitizers and other equipment

“Contact the Central Police Office (CPO) at once if more resources are required in this regard,” he concluded.
