BEVERLY HILLS – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced that it will be introducing a new award next year onwards, keeping in light the progress made in the arena of filmmaking.
In a statement issued on its official website, the Academy confirmed that from the year 2021 onwards a new category in the Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, would be introduced entitled ‘Best Performance in an Oscar Acceptance Speech’.
The announcement further confirmed that unlike the Best Actor/Actress and Supporting Actor/Supporting Actress categories, the Performance in an Oscar Acceptance Speech award will not have male and female categories.
“Keeping up with the times, we realised that everyone should be vying for the same performance based awards,” AMPAS President David Rubin said while talking to The Dependent.
“However, moving forward we might introduce a ‘Best Supporting’ category in acceptance speech awards given that these performances are almost always impossible without similarly commendable supporting performances,” Rubin added.
Like other awards, the ‘Best Performance in Oscar Acceptance Speech’ award would also be decided by the Academy’s voting panel, which is currently constituted by over 7,000 voters.
Keeping recent controversies in mind, the AMPAS officials have vowed to ensure diversity in the recipients of the newly introduced category, which will see the award in 2021 being given on the basis of the performances during this year’s 92nd Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles.
“Or we could use a separate category for each demographic to reemphasise why this new category is being created to begin with,” Rubin added.
