Court adjourns hearing in Siraj Durrani case till Dec 17

KARACHI: The investigation officer of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday submitted a report in the accountability court in the on-going inquiry against Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani for accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income as well as allegations that he had embezzled public funds.

The NAB officer submitted a report following a court order in the previous hearing directing the Bureau to separate Durrani’s wife, son and daughters from the reference. The court had ordered concerned authorities to initiate proceedings to declare the accused as fugitive.

Durrani and other accused were presented in the court during the hearing today which was, subsequently, adjourned till Dec 17.

NAB Karachi had arrested Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani from a hotel in Islamabad in February this year. He has been in official custody ever since.

Talking to media after today’s hearing, Durrani said he celebrated Sindhi Culture Day in jail. While replying to a question, he said that the party will decide about its stance over the matter of extension of the army chief.

“I am unaware of the contemporary political scenario,” he said.

He also lauded the Sindh government’s decision to revive the student unions in educational institutions.

“[Late] Benazir Bhutto was also supportive of student role in politics,” he said.
