LHC directs NAB to probe ‘illegal’ Mohmand Dam contract

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday ordered the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to probe the “illegal” award of the Mohmand Dam contract to a consultancy firm on “expensive rates”, as it disposed of the relevant petition.

The LHC divisional bench in the chair of Justice Baqar Najafi heard the petition against awarding the contract of the Mohmad Dam illegally and on expensive rates.

The petitioner counsel Rana Abdul Hameed told the court that the consultancy contract of the Mohmand Dam awarded to the subsidiary company of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) on an amount of Rs 9.8 billion after canceling it on Rs 5.5 billion.

The petitioner argued that the retired engineers of the WAPDA worked in the NESPAK which did not have experience of constructing the dams while the national exchequer incurred a loss of Rs 3.5 billion by awarding the contract violating the procedures.

The counsel insisted the court to order the NAB to take action against the irregularities in awarding the contract to the NESPAK.

The court after hearing all the arguments decided the case ordering the NAB to look into the matter and decide it immediately.
