ISLAMABAD: Eight Pakistanis who were martyred in last Friday’s terror attacks at two mosques in Christchurch have been buried according to Islamic customs in New Zealand, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Friday.

Fifty devotees were slaughtered nearly a week ago by a white supremacist in two mosques in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island, a massacre he filmed and broadcast live on Facebook.

Dr Mohammad Faisal, the FO spokesperson, tweeted that more than 20 family members who had flown from Pakistan were able to join the last ceremonies and their travel was facilitated by FO and the New Zealand government.

The FO said that the funeral was attended by more than 5,000 people including 1,500 Muslims who lived in New Zealand.

“One of the martyrs, Syed Areeb Ahmed would be repatriated to Pakistan in the next few days. His family is being kept informed,” the spokesperson revealed.

“Our High Commissioner and the High Commission staff remains in Christchurch to continue assistance to the bereaved families,” he assured.
