WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump claims he is unfairly being linked to an attacker who had lauded him in a written manifesto and shared most of his beliefs.

Trump tweeted on Monday that the media “is working overtime to link me to the horrible man”. He adds: “They will have to work very hard to prove that one.”

The US President’s tweet read: “The Fake News Media is working overtime to link me to the horrible man in New Zealand just because he lauded me, shared most of my beliefs and adhered to the same supremacist ideology that I uphold. They will have to work very hard to prove that one. So Ridiculous!”

The gunman in question wrote a document in which he called himself a white nationalist and referred to Mr Trump as “a symbol of renewed white identity”.

The US president has expressed sympathy for himself and those adhering to his ideology, playing down the threat of white nationalism across the world, saying he did not consider it a rising threat.

“Especially to me, since I am one myself,” Trump said during a press briefing on Thursday.
