LHC seeks NAB’s response on Khawaja brothers’ bail pleas

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday accepted for hearing Khawaja brothers’ bail petitions in the Paragon Housing Society scam case and sought a detailed answer from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

As per the details, the LHC accepted the bail pleas of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Member National Assembly (MNA) Khawaja Saad Rafique as well as his brother, former Punjab minister Salman Rafique. It also issued a notice to NAB, directing the bureau to submit its response by March 6.

The bail petition stated that NAB had so far failed to prove any allegations leveled on the Khawaja brothers in the case and the two accused had fully cooperated with the bureau while also providing it with complete records.

Khawaja brothers are being investigated by the accountability watchdog for alleged corruption in Paragon Housing Society and accumulating wealth beyond known sources of income.

Saad Rafique and Salman Rafique were arrested on December 11 after the LHC had rejected their bail pleas.

NAB had launched an investigation into the alleged scam in November last year after a number of victims staged protests and held a press conference at the Lahore Press Club against the fraud committed by the management of Ashiana Housing Scheme.

Last year, the anti-graft authority had also arrested former Lahore Development Authority (LDA) director general Ahad Khan Cheema and others over allegations of corruption in the Ashiana scam.
