Qureshi raises Indian HR violations in Kashmir with UNGA president

ISLAMABAD: President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Maria Fernanda Espinosa met with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Friday and discussed key matters, including the Kashmir dispute, the role of UN in maintaining peace and solving problems across the globe.

A statement by the Foreign Office said that the two leaders discussed “global trends, multilateralism, the regional situation, the centrality of the UN and Security Council reform”.

Since assuming office in September last year, this is Espinosa’s first visit to any country in Asia.

During the meeting, FM Qureshi briefed the UNGA president about the human rights abuses by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir.

“The implementation of UN Security Council’s resolution should be made a must in the light of the Kashmir issues,” the foreign minister said.

“We can only find a solution to world problems through joint efforts,” he added.

During her five-day visit to Pakistan, Espinosa is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minsiter Imran Khan, President Arif Alvi, civil society leaders and UN representatives.

Further, Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) chairperson and members of the Women Parliamentary Caucus will also meet the UNGA president.

As part of her schedule, she will also address think tanks, students, the academia and visit the Peacekeeping Training Centre.
