Rs21bn in taxes loom over OLMT project

The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has issued tax notices amounting to Rs21 billion to the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) pertaining to the Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) project, according to a news channel’s report.

According to details, PRA has issued a show cause notice to LDA for sales tax on the metro project amounting to Rs7.2bn while PMTA was issued a Rs12.9bn notice. Both organisations have been given 10 days to submit replies on the matter.

In case of failure to submit satisfactory responses to the PRA, a Rs21bn fine would be imposed on the OLMT, the channel’s report claimed.

Earlier this month, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Aleem Khan said that the OLMT project will be completed between June and July this year.

“We won’t close the project. As many as Rs300bn have already been spent on the project even if I want to I can’t close it now,” he said.

“As many as Rs120bn will be annually spent on Orange line train after five years from now. The Punjab government will have to spend Rs10bn per month,” he claimed.

The OLMT project was initiated by former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif.
