Balochistan forms task force to tackle drought

QUETTA: The government of Balochistan has decided to form a task force comprising pubic representatives, concerned federal and provincial department’s authorities along with representatives of donor agencies and civil society to overcome the problems of malnutrition and spur relief activities in drought-stricken areas of the province.

These views were expressed by Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Jam Mir Kamal while talking to a delegation of World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) who had called on him under the leadership of Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Nutrition Dr Nushin Hamid and WHO Regional Advisor Nutrition Dr Ayub Al-Jawaldeh.

Provincial Minister for Health Mir Naseebullah Marri was also present on the occasion.

“The task force would recommend initiating short-term, mid-term and long-term projects for the drought-stricken areas of Balochistan which would then be implemented for removing the impacts of drought and malnutrition,” said the Balochistan CM.

The Balochistan CM said that the provincial government was also adopting concrete measures to bring improvement in the education and health sectors, adding that divisional and district hospitals were being activated. He said that surgery facilities had also been commenced in those hospitals.

He further said that nutrition emergency in the province had been imposed whilst efforts were being made to control mother-child mortality rate.

The chief minister welcomed the assistance of WHO, UNICEF and other donor agencies in connection with drought, malnutrition and in overcoming mother-child mortality rate.

He assured the delegation that the provincial government would extend help to the donor agencies in this regard.
