By-polls conducted on vacant seats in Sindh, KP

KARACHI/PESHAWAR: Polling for vacant seats in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) concluded peacefully on Sunday after which the unofficial results started pouring in.

There were 139 empty seats for the local government in Sindh and 334 in KP. In six districts of Karachi, 183 candidates contested for 24 seats. In District West, four seats were vacant, eight in Malir, six in South, four in Central and one each in Korangi and East on which around 540,960 people voted till 5pm. The local electoral body had set up 389 polling stations comprising 1,352 booths.

Meanwhile, polling was held on three municipal seats and in Bannu, on five district and one councillor seat. The polling ended at 4pm in Bannu.

Security measures were taken as Section 144 had been imposed in the region and more than 1,100 police officers were stationed on duty.

Moreover, by-polls were held at Union Councils Hasan Jamali and Gohram Mari in Nawabshah, while they are being held for Town Committee Halani in Badin.

According to unofficial results, Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) candidates won all three seats in Mirpurkhas, beating rival PPP candidates. MQM-P candidate Raisuddin won from Ward-8, Muhammad Imran Qureshi from Ward-23 and Junaid Qureshi from Ward-39. Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) Ghazi Samo candidate won the by-election of UC Shah Mardan Shah, defeating rival PPP candidate. Ghazi bagged 1,643 votes while PPP candidate Roshan Rahmoon got 1,354 votes.
