Government to establish organisation for poverty alleviation

ISLAMABAD: Assistant to the Prime Minister on Media Iftikhar Durrani Wednesday said that the government decided to establish Poverty Alleviation Coordination Organisation at the federal level in order to implement Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision.

Addressing a press conference here at Information Service Academy (ISA), he said poverty alleviation programme was announced by Prime Minister Imran Khan on completion of first 100-days of the government.

There were a number of departments including Pakistan Baitul Mal, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund and Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) working with the aim to alleviate poverty, he added.

Iftikhar informed that it was decided to establish an umbrella organisation to oversee the work of these organisations, coordinate, avoid duplication and carry out research and development related to the poverty reduction.

He said Poverty Alleviation Coordination Organisation would keep liaison with all other departments working for poverty alleviation and mobilise funding for the projects.

A board of directors will run the organisation, he said while adding the government had nominated expert economist Ishfaq Hassan as the chairman of the board.

The board members will be from ministries of planning and development, finance, provincial governments and private sector.

He said that the coordination organisation would have a mandate to constitute more bodies to undertake poverty alleviation at the grassroots level and seek partnerships with the private sector.

Iftikhar Durrani said details about structure of the new organization would be shared with the media in the next briefing.
