LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has sealed several factories across Punjab over food safety and hygiene violations.
The factories were using textile dyes to add red colour to ketchup. Furthermore, rotten eggs were used in the manufacturing of mayonnaise and chemicals were being added to sauces.
According to PFA, 39 production units were checked out of which five were sealed, seven fined and 26 warned over manufacture of poor ketchup, mayonnaise and other sauces.
A total of 4,600 litres of ketchup, 15kg of textile dyes and 70kg of starch were seized during raids, according to Director General of Punjab Food Authority Capt (r) Muhammad Usman.
Flies and cockroaches were discovered where the food was being prepared and stored.
Samples of ketchup have also been collected from 14 production units for testing.
Two of the sealed factories were located in Lahore, one in Rahim Yar Khan and one in Rawalpindi.
