Pakistan recovers five abducted Iranian border personnel

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Thursday announced that Pakistan’s security agencies had recovered five of the 14 Iranian border guards who were abducted from along the south-eastern border in Balochistan last month.

“With concerted efforts of the Pakistani LEAs and armed forces, 5 abducted Iranian guards have been safely recovered,” said FO Spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal in a Twitter post.

“They are in good health, being handed over to Iranian authorities,” the spokesperson added. “Concerted efforts under vigilance of the military leadership are on, to recover the other guards.”

Earlier, an Iranian separatist group called Jaish al-Adl had claimed the abduction, saying they had seized the personnel at the Mirjaveh border post in Sistan-Balochistan province.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had blamed “terrorist groups that are guided and supported by foreign forces” for the abductions and demanded action by the Pakistani authorities to help locate the captive troops.

A state-owned news website had reported that the 14 guards were involved in “a security operation” and included two members of the elite Revolutionary Guards intelligence unit, seven Basij militiamen and five regular border guards.
