Nicole Kidman has often refrained from talking about her 11-year marriage to Tom Cruise and the reason behind their breakup is still not known. However, recent interview, Kidman opened up about one aspect of their relationship and revealed that being married to a powerful man protected her from experiencing the kind of sexual abuse that more and more women in Hollywood are speaking up about.
In an interview with New York Magazine‘s The Cut, Kidman, 51, reflected back on that time and said she now realises that her then-husband’s superstar status protected her from the dark side of Hollywood.
“I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me – it was protection,” Kidman said, adding, “I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned.”
After the couple split, Kidman shared that attitudes began to change towards her.
“When I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up.”
Kidman and Cruise, who have two adopted children together, met on the set of 1990’s Days of Thunder and married that same year, when she was 22 and he was 28. The two split in 2001, with Cruise citing irreconcilable differences. She married country singer Keith Urban in 2006.
Kidman rarely talks about her relationship with Cruise, something she said was a deliberate choice made with her current husband Keith in mind.
“I’m married now to the man who is my great love, and it almost feels disrespectful,” she said.
