Former VC of Punjab University sent on 12-day physical remand

LAHORE: An Accountability Court in Lahore on Friday approved a 12-day physical remand of Punjab University (PU) former vice-chancellor (VC) Dr Mujahid Kamran .

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) produced Dr Mujahid Kamran before the Accountability Court along with five other accused named as Dr Liaquat, Dr Aurangzaib, Dr Raas Masood, Dr Kamran Zahid and Ameen Athar.

During the hearing, the former VC maintained that he served with sheer honesty throughout his tenure.

Regarding charges of illegal appointments, Dr Kamran said that all hirings approved by him were presented before the syndicate.

He maintained that all the appointments he had made were neither ghost nor fake, as the official record of all employees exists.

The court later accorded the permission to NAB for a 12-day remand of the educationist.

A day earlier, NAB arrested Dr Kamran on charges of irregularities during his tenure.

The anti-graft watchdog apprehended Kamran after he appeared before the Bureau’s Lahore office to record his statement.

The erstwhile PU VC is alleged of carrying out massive irregularities during his tenure at the varsity. Among a number of improprieties, Kamran is charged with granting approval for several hirings across the university in violation of the laws and of being involved in the unlawful appointment of his wife Shazia Qureshi as the principal of Punjab University Law College.

Awarding scholarships to students on the basis of nepotism, as well as giving contracts to his “preferred” contractors in violation of the laws are the other allegations against the educationist.
