Another US envoy runs over motorcyclists in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: At least two people were injured when a vehicle driven by the US envoy, Chad Rex Ausburn, rammed into a motorbike near Secretariat on Sunday.

This is second such incident wherein a US diplomat was involved in a road accident. Earlier this month, a local resident was killed and another injured after a vehicle belonging to the US envoy had ran over motorcyclists.

According to initial details, the incident took place at Secretariat Chowk. One of the two injured were identified as Nazakat who works at Motamar Al-Alam Al-Islami, an Islamic organisation. Following the accident, he was hurried to PIMS hospital in the capital.

Hospital sources said Nazakat got a head injury while his fellow Waseem received an internal injury. Both Nazakat and Waseem are currently under medical treatment at the hospital.

Second Secretary Chad Rex Ausburn at the US Embassy in Islamabad was reportedly behind the wheel at the time of the accident. Media reports indicated the Ausburn was using his phone and talking to someone while driving a Toyota jeep (QN-734) at Constitution Avenue.

Police officials told media that they had taken Ausburn and his vehicle into custody. Further action will be taken after receipt of report compiled by the traffic police, they added.

However, later reports claimed that the CCTV footage of the accident showed the motorcyclists changing their lane without using indicators.

Man receives head injury after accident with US diplomat in Islamabad

Earlier in April, a local resident was killed and another injured after a vehicle belonging to the US Embassy in Islamabad rammed into a motorcycle. According to details, the accident occurred in the Daman-e-Koh area of the capital in the afternoon when the defence and air attache Col Joseph Emanuel’s vehicle, bearing no. QM-058 (64-48) hit the bike bearing no. ARM-900. The impact of the accident killed Muhammad Ateeq Baig, son of Muhammad Idrees on the spot, while his cousin Raheel, son of Changez, was injured.

On April 4, the federal government informed the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that the American diplomat who killed a motorcyclist in Islamabad cannot stand trial in Pakistan because of diplomatic immunity. Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Raja Khalid said the US diplomat can neither be arrested nor tried, adding that his name has been put on ‘blacklist’ to stop him from leaving Pakistan.
