Italian-Pakistani ‘killed for honour’ in Gujrat

— Permission to disinter, examine the body of 26-year-old sought by police

An Italian-Pakistani woman was allegedly killed in the name of honour by her father, brother and uncle in Gujrat, reported a private media outlet on Tuesday.

According to the police, 26-year-old Sana Cheema’s family had claimed she had suffered a heart attack which led to her death and laid her to rest in West Mangowal area of the Gujrat District on April 18, However, following social media reports claiming the deceased was murdered, Gujrat district police officer (DPO) started an investigation.

Police also told that the girl’s father, identified as Ghulam Mustafa, wanted to marry her off to a relative, but Sana wanted to get married in Italy. Knowing her plans, the woman was tricked into coming to Pakistan three months ago. With a day left before her return to Italy, the father took on board his son, Adnan Mustafa, and brother, Mazhar Iqbal, and executed the murder.

A case was registered against the accused on Monday, but all the three suspects are still at large.

Police informed that the real cause of the death could be ascertained following the post-mortem examination of the body, for which they had sought the permission of a sessions judge.

Meanwhile, the Italian foreign ministry said that it had kept an eye on the case, adding that it was determined to pursue it until it met a logical end. The ministry also said that it was willing to cooperate with Pakistani authorities in probing the incident.

The Pakistani community in Brescia has also protested against the killing.
