NA body considers consular protection policy

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development on Friday considered the consular protection policy formulated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in pursuance of the order of the Lahore High Court (LHC).

The 37th meeting of the committee was held under the chairmanship of MNA Mir Aamir Ali Khan Magsi at Parliament House.

The committee recommended that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should submit the protection policy and the complete detail of Pakistanis imprisoned in different countries along with the assistance provided to them.

The committee unanimously confirmed the minutes of its 36th meeting held on February 6.

The committee brought under consideration the issue of Grand Hayat Hotel located at Constitution Avenue, compensation to the overseas Pakistanis who have invested in the project and an update to the inquiry made by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The representative of FIA informed the committee that the project was fair and corruption-free.

The committee asked the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman to safeguard the interests of the innocent overseas Pakistanis and to ensure the development of human resource.

The committee took serious notice of the absence of the attorney general of Pakistan from the meeting without any prior intimation.

The committee also considered the issue of pending cases of overseas Pakistanis related to death claims in OPF.

The OPF MD assured the committee that all pending cases have been entertained accordingly.

Lawmakers and senior officers from the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development also attended the meeting.
