43 per cent Pakistanis believe creating new provinces will be beneficial: poll

ISLAMABAD: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup & Gilani, Pakistan, 43 per cent of Pakistanis believe that creating new provinces would be good for the country.

The survey also informs that three out of people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) opine the same while 37 per cent in Sindh opine differently.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked, “Suppose if Pakistan is further divided into more provinces, would that improve the conditions of the country, deteriorate them or would they remain the same?”

In response to this question, 43 per cent said creating more provinces would improve the country’s conditions, 31 per cent said it would deteriorate them and 22 per cent said the country’s conditions would remain the same.  Four per cent did not know or wish to respond.

Responding to the same question in 2009, 20 per cent had said that creating more provinces would improve the country’s conditions, 53 per cent said it would deteriorate them and 25 per cent had said the country’s conditions would remain the same. Two per cent did not know or wish to respond.

The study was released by Gilani Research Foundation and carried out by Gallup & Gilani, Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.

The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 1,699 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country from February 19 to 23.
