ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Defence approved the Joint Maritime Information Organisation Bill (JMIO) 2018 on Wednesday.
The committee, which met under the chairmanship of Shaikh Rohale Asghar, considered the bill and after detailed deliberations, approved it with slight amendments with the vote of majority except MNA Dr Shireen Mehrunnisa Mazari, who gave a note of dissent.
The committee was informed that the main purpose of the bill was to formalise the mechanism for effective exchange of maritime related information and coordination between all the stakeholders.
It was further informed that JMIO would work as a focal point for collecting, fusing and disseminating information related to the maritime domain to all stakeholders, therefore, a bill passed by the parliament was considered imperative for achieving seamless integration of all organisations.
The committee was also briefed on the powers and functions of JMIO in detail.
The meeting was attended by MNAs Sheikh Muhammad Akram, Surriya Asghar, Sardar Muhammad Shafqat Hayat Khan, Saeed Ahmed Khan Manais, Sheikh Fayyaz ud Din, Dr Shireen Mehrunnisa Mazari, Shafqat Mahmood, Malik Muhammad Amir Dogar, Sanjay Perwani, Muhammad Ijazul Haq and officials of the defence ministry.
