LAHORE: A Lahore High Court (LHC) Division Bench on Monday issued notices to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman and others on a petition, filed by former Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) chairman Asif Hashmi against his arrest and remand in illegal investment and plots allotment cases.
The bench headed by Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan heard the matter.
As the proceedings commenced, the petitioner’s counsel, arguing before the court, submitted that NAB had arrested the former chairman, in connection with illegal investment worth Rs985.56 million with M\s High Link and illegal plots allotment cases, and had obtained his physical remand till April 4.
He questioned the arrest and remand of Asif Hashmi, submitting that the accused was not served any notice. Neither the NAB chairman nor any court had ordered for his arrest in the said cases, he added.
He pleaded with the court to set aside orders of physical remand and set the accused free or send him to jail on judicial remand to face the trial.
The bench, after hearing initial arguments, issued notices to the respondents for April 12 and sought replies.
It is pertinent to note that Asif Hashmi served as the ETPB chairperson between 2008 and 2013. After completing his tenure, he had left for Dubai. Hashmi returned to Pakistan on February 10, 2018, and the FIA had arrested him from the Supreme Court premises after it was revealed that he did not secure bail in some cases against him. Later, Hashmi’s custody was transferred to the NAB authorities who had obtained his physical remand from an accountability court.
