Japan to provide $27.3 million in aid to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The government of Japan would sign an agreement on Tuesday to provide US $4.7 million (500 million Japanese yen) in financial assistance for Pakistan’s Economic and Social Development Programme and US $22.5 million (2.392 billion Japanese Yen) for improvement of airport security (Phase-2) project.

Charge D’ affairs Ad Interim of the Embassy of Japan Takashi Harada and the Economic Affairs Division Secretary Syed Ghazanfar Abbas Gillani will sign the agreement on the behalf of the government of Japan and Pakistan respectively.

The grant for the Economic and Social Development Programme will be used to procure equipment for meteorological observation. It will enable the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) to improve the accuracy of weather forecasting and to disseminate early warnings for climate disaster.

The second project for improvement of airport security (Phase-2) is a follow up of the grant aid signed in 2013, and would provide screening of check-in baggage, hand baggage and vehicle at Karachi, Faisalabad, Multan and the new Islamabad airport, as the phase one project provided security equipment for Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad airports.
