Ragpicker killed, one injured in IED blast near garbage dump in Hyderabad

A ragpicker was killed and a passerby injured as a result of an improvised explosive device (IED) blast on Hyderabad’s Qasimabad road on Monday night.

According to officials, an improvised explosive device of around 90 grams detonated in a garbage bin claiming the life of an unidentified ragpicker and injuring 35-year-old Idris.

Both the injured and the killed were taken to Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) city branch.

After collecting particles and other forensic evidence from the site, Ramzan Panhwar of Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) said that a small crater of several inches was created where the IED was planted.

While Panhwar said that the IED exploded probably as a result of the ragpicker trying to open or pick it, the BDS officials have said that it was an electronic device.

SSP Pir Shah Mohammad said that no secondary device was discovered at the site of the blast while adding that the ragpicker’s upper body, from his ribs to face was badly hit. Further details will be revealed following the post-mortem examination.

He also said that it was not a terrorist activity, instead, it seems that someone had dumped explosives like a hand grenade.

The explosion that occurred around 7 PM was heard in Qasimabad road’s adjoining areas.
