LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and senior lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan on Monday stated that Nawaz Sharif is fearful of Shehbaz’s meeting with senior Saudi Arabian officials adding that the Sharif brothers were embroiled in a “conflict”.
“Shehbaz must have called him and told him he was meeting senior [Saudi] officials. So Nawaz panicked and travelled to Saudi Arabia,” the PPP leader said, speaking to media personnel on Monday.
“The Sharif brothers are in disagreement on issues. Shehbaz Sharif says he should be made the next prime minister, but the votes are with Nawaz and Maryam, and not with Shehbaz,” Ahsan said.
“Shehbaz is trying very hard to become the next prime minister,” he added. “But it is important now to know what the Sharif brothers are doing in Saudi Arabia. Shehbaz Sharif left in Raheel Sharif’s plane to show that he is on the side of the army and the judiciary. Nawaz went by a commercial flight.”
The PPP leader further added that Shehbaz Sharif and former Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar held meetings in the dead of night.
Aitzaz further stated that Saudi authorities could no longer prove to be beneficial for Nawaz Sharif.
Aitzaz stated that his party has not entered into a political alliance with Tahirul Qadri and that PPP’s participation in Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) led All Parties Conference was to express solidarity with the Model Town incident victims.
Nawaz Sharif’s spokesperson, on the other hand, has denied reports that the former prime minister was in Saudi Arabia to negotiate a deal.
