Sharifs have no concern for environment or history, says Imran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Saturday slammed Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for playing down the Supreme Court’s criticism of the provincial government for not taking measures to ensure no damage is caused to heritage sites by the Orange Line Metro Train project.

In a statement on his Twitter account, the PTI chief said Shahbaz has forgotten to mention the Supreme Court’s restrictions and criticism in respect of the OLMT project in the judgment on the issue, especially the scathing critique of how environment and heritage sites’ preservation was overlooked and these must be taken into consideration.

He further wrote, “the question that arises is how a Rs 200 billion project was undertaken without a proper feasibility study regarding the impact on the environment and our historic sites? A simple answer is Sharifs have no concern for environment or history,” he said.

He concluded by saying that all that the Sharifs are interested in are expensive showcase projects for election campaigns (in this for 2018) and for the fat commissions from these projects that they can whisk away into their overseas accounts.

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday morning paid a surprise visit to monitor construction of Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) project in Lahore after getting a green signal from the Supreme Court (SC).

Arriving at the site without protocol, Punjab CM met with the engineers and other staff members and directed them to complete the project as early as possible. He also congratulated them on court’s decision.

Shehbaz Sharif said that the project will facilitate people in travelling and that it will be a biggest successful plan of Punjab government.

Earlier, SC announced reserved verdict after seven months and 20 days and accepted provincial government’s pleas that were filed against Lahore High Court’s August order (LHC) to stop the construction within 200 feet of 11 historical sites in the metropolis for safety purpose.
