Bilawal says tolerance key to establishing peaceful society

KARACHI: Pakistan People Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Thursday that tolerance was the key to establishing peaceful societies on the principles of merit, equality and brotherhood.

He said this in a message issued on the occasion of International Day for Tolerance, observed worldwide on November 16, to celebrate and educate people on the virtues of tolerance.

The PPP chairman said that modern-day society was full of anarchy and violence due to intolerance.
He said that politicians in Pakistan are used to insulting each other which is a clear sign of rampant intolerance in the society. He further remarked that in most parts of the world, tolerance was not promoted the way that it deserved to be.

The International Day for Tolerance was observed all over the world to promote the habit of respecting and recognising the rights and beliefs of fellow human beings by everyone. Live discussions and debates took place across the world on this day, focusing on how various forms of injustice, oppression, racism and unfair discrimination have a negative impact on society.

The United Nations (UN) general assembly in 1996 invited member states to observe the International Day for Tolerance with activities designed for educational establishments and the wider public

Earlier, the UN had observed the “year of tolerance” in 1995, proclaimed by the UN general assembly in 1993 at the initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
