RCB confiscates 700 litres of substandard milk

RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) on Tuesday confiscated over 700 litres of adulterated and substandard milk which was later disposed by officials of the board.

According to RCB spokesman Qaiser Mahmood, the RCB Food Department team checked vehicles transporting milk to different areas of the city and impounded a vehicle, bearing registration number LES 3324, as it was carrying adulterated and substandard milk that contained traces of sodium bicarbonate. The milk was being transported from Shorkot to be supplied in the city’s Cantt area.

The spokesman informed that the team, on the special directive of Cantonment Executive Officer Dr Saima Shah, was conducting raids on shops and checking quality of food items.

He said that adulterated milk was later disposed of in a water drain at Kiyani Road, while two nabbed persons were handed over to the Race Course Police Station for investigations.

Replying to a question, he said that 20 samples of milk were collected from restaurants and fast food outlets, which were later sent to a laboratory for tests.

He said the food department was trying to ensure supply of healthy and quality food items to the people. Raids were being conducted to check quality of edibles, and action in accordance with the law, was being taken against restaurants and fast food outlets found involved in the supply of substandard and low-quality food items to the customers.

Qaiser Mahmood also informed that raids were conducted at Labaik Naan Centre, Khan Fish Centre, Mashallah Naan Centre, Bismillah Milk Shop, Bari Sarkar Milk Shop and Khan General Store. So far, 12 notices have been issued under section 118-C against violators, while Rs 7,000 fine was imposed on Peshawari Fish Shop over unhygienic conditions and a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on Mustafa Fish Shop.
