NAB orders probe against Shehbaz over corruption charges in Multan metro bus project

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday ordered an enquiry into the corruption allegations against Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the Multan Metro Bus project and the controversial sale of a flight-worthy aircraft of the national flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

The orders for an inquiry against Shehbaz Sharif came during a meeting of NAB’s director generals with Bureau Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal in the chair.

The NAB chief took a suo moto notice of the two matters, and issued instructions that the investigation must be completed within 10 months.

ARY News had, in August this year, accused the Punjab chief minister of receiving more than Rs10 million in kickbacks for the Multan Metro Bus project, which the chief minister had rejected. While on the other hand, the PIA aircraft was sold to a German museum without prior permission from the relevant authorities.

The NAB chief said that the details about legal proceedings of all mega corruption cases must be prepared and submitted within next three months, adding the corruption cases in Bureau would not be kept in files and will be taken care of as per law of the land.

“We will follow a policy of zero tolerance for eradicating corruption in the country,” he said, adding that all enquiries, complains and investigations would be completed on merit and transparency. “We have set a method and time of ten months which would be followed strictly and necessary measures would be taken against all involved in corruption through pursuing policy of transparency and merit,” the chairman said.

Unlike past, the Bureau will take an effective against the corrupt elements while assuring all possible steps to improve the reputation of the NAB, the Bureau chief said.

Discouraging the misuse of authority by the NAB officials, he said the Bureau is not a place for corrupt officials and everyone will be dealt with in accordance with law.

Justice Javed said he would not take a moment to act against corrupt elements in the Bureau to punish them according to law and directed for an internal as well as external audit of the NAB to ensure fair usage of funds and resources.

While vowing to make the NAB a respectful institution, he directed the concerned DGs to present enquiry and investigation reports of that Private Housing Societies within one week so that time period of these cases would be reviewed.
