Nawaz to speak at British parliament on Pak-UK relations

LONDON: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will address the British parliament and speak on Pakistan-United Kingdom relations, Britain’s trade envoy to Pakistan and Member of Parliament (MP) Rehman Chishti has said.

The British parliamentarian called on Nawaz Sharif in London on Tuesday and invited him to address the members of parliament. Sharif accepted the invitation but a date for the address has yet to be fixed, said Chishti.

Providing details of their meeting, Chishti said that he and Sharif discussed various issues including prospects of strengthening Pakistan-UK relations, trade security and upholding democratic institutions.

“Britain has strongly supported the democratic journey of Pakistan,” the British parliamentarian said.

On the other hand, a source close to Nawaz Sharif said that the meeting was held to discuss matters of mutual interest in light of Rehman Chishti’s forthcoming visit to Pakistan.

“Rehman Chishti showed keen interest in developing better trade relations between the two countries for which Mr Sharif offered his full support’ said the source.

Chishti was appointed as Prime Minister Theresa May’s adviser for the promotion of trade relations between Pakistan and UK last month due to his “immense knowledge of Pakistan”.

Chishti, originally hailing from Muzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir, has also served as an adviser to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in the past and has worked closely with her on several issues during her years of exile. He continues to enjoy close relations with Benazir’s children.
