Three suspected Ansarul Sharia members arrested

KARACHI: Security agencies have arrested at least three suspected members of the newly-emerged Ansarul Sharia militant group in raids in Multan, Quetta and Pishin, officials said on Thursday.

According to details, Talha Ansari, a suspected member of the militant outfit, was taken into custody in a raid in Multan. Police officials said that Ansari had fled to Multan from Karachi after a crackdown on the group following the assassination attempt on Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly Khawaja Izharul Hassan on the first day on Eidul Azha.

Meanwhile, two other people suspected of having links with Ansarul Sharia were taken into custody from Quetta and Pishin.

The suspects were identified as Mushtaq, reportedly a faculty member at the University of Karachi, and Mufti Habibullah, who runs seminaries in Karachi and Hyderabad.

Security forces had earlier arrested Shehryar alias Dr Abdullah Hashmi, allegedly the chief of Ansarul Sharia in Pakistan, during a raid conducted in the Kaneez Fatima Society in Karachi.

It is said that Sheheryar worked as an IT expert in the computer department of NED University. He had received his Master’s degree in Applied Physics from the University of Karachi.
