PPP to launch anti-govt street protests in Sept: Shah

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah said on Wednesday that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will protest against the government on the Panama Leaks issue.

Speaking in a TV talk show, Shah said the PPP would come out onto the streets over the issue in September.

Khursheed Shah added that the government was not willing to budge on the ToRs.

According to Shah, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar had said he would resign if things did not improve a year after his party came into power. “Nisar does not have the guts to resign,” he added.

Separately, addressing the concluding session of PAC staff training, Shah said that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has recovered Rs 119 billion so far and if some flaws prevailing in the system are fixed then more recoveries are possible.

Shah observed that as an institution the PAC was stronger than the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

“If a separate and strong secretariat is made PAC’s performance would better a lot,” he added.

Shah said that massive corruption was revealed in the grant of contract for Balochistan’s Naulong Dam but the contract was cancelled and then re-awarded through a fresh tender, saving Rs 10 billion.

The opposition leader said that “the PAC investigates corruption and irregularities in financial affairs and that is why strengthening this system was need of the hour”.

He said he was glad that six senators had become part of this committee on his recommendations, adding that the PAC was strengthening due to participation of members from both the houses of parliament.
